The Belcher, otherwise known as Earl Danners is a socially inept loner who works at the Denver Public Library and drinks by himself in the corner of the bar every night.
One evening, after numerous beers, an attack on an innocent patron takes place at his local watering hole. Although shy, he is compelled to intervene and when he attempts to confront the culprits — instead of a yell — a sonic belch blast erupts that knocks the bad guys over and shocks Earl almost as much as everyone else present.
His abilities are noted by The Soothsayer, who witnesses the event and decides to seek out Earl and help him hone his skills and harness his power.
He must quickly grow into his role as The Belcher, as Blatherskite, the agents of EAR and The Gasser are quickly advancing on an agenda to eradicate all forms of personal expression — including belches.
On his journey from bystander to street vigilante, he encounters Daphne — aka Cricket, and a whirlwind affair ensues that will forever change both young lovers.
